Laser scar reduction is a safe and effective method of minimizing the appearance of scars. There are many types of lasers that can help with scar reduction. One is ablative, non-ablative and fractional. At the Vein Care Center, we use Laser Genesis Skin Therapy® (non-ablative), which provides outstanding results for our patients. Dr. Aggarwal will guide the laser handpiece over your skin. It won’t hurt, but you will experience a warming sensation. The laser heats the dermis (the underlying layer of your skin), which stimulates the growth of collagen. In just four to six treatments, you’ll see smoother, more attractive skin as the upper layers of skin are replaced by new skin. The sensation is similar to sitting in front of a fireplace. Treatments can be combined with cryotherapy, steroid injection or silicone gel use depending on goals. These options will be discussed with you at your appointment.
Unfortunately, scar reductionis not a one time treatment and requires several treatments, spaced out about every 4 weeks. Immediately following the treatment, your skin will be slightly red over the treated area(s) and will disappear within a day. As time goes on and with each treatment, there is a gradual reduction in the scar with improved texture, even tone and size. Eventually the scar can disappear depending on results.
Laser treatment is a great choice for people interested in scar revision but don’t want plastic surgery or are prone to keloid formation. The benefits of laser scar reduction are:
Laser scar reduction can be used on any scar on any part of the body including acne scars, medical or surgical scars, or scars resulting from injury or trauma. Your specific treatment plan will be customized for your scar. Deep-grooved scars may need to be treated with a more ablative laser which requires some downtime and post-procedure care.
Many of our patients at the Vein Care Center visit us for acne scar removal. Other types of scars that can be treated include keloid scars, hypertrophic scars and other raised scars. Scars can be treated as early as six weeks. An example may be following a c-section or plastic surgery.
Dr. Aggarwal will assess your scar at your screening and inform you about what you can expect from laser scar removal therapy. While laser treatments are highly effective at treating most scars, some patients should avoid the procedure, including those with cystic acne, psoriasis or dermatitis. Dr. Aggarwal is the best person to make the determination of whether or not you are a good candidate for laser scar reduction.
