What Is Post-Thrombotic Syndrome?

Although most patients who have had a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) recover fully, as many as 40 percent of patients will develop post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS), a condition characterized by ongoing symptoms of blood clots or DVT.

Blood clots in the deep veins can cause inflammation and damage the valves, which leads to the blood leaking or flowing back toward the foot. The buildup and pressure and accumulation of fluid may cause swelling and, eventually, skin ulcers.

What Are the Risk Factors for Post-Thrombotic Syndrome?

Some patients are more likely to develop PTS than others. You are at higher risk of developing post-thrombotic syndrome if you:

• Are older than 65
• Are overweight or obese
• Have had deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
• Have had more than a single blood clot in the same leg more than once
• Have symptoms of a blood clot a month after diagnosis
• Have difficulty with keeping blood thinner levels stable during the initial three months of treatment

What Are the Symptoms of Post Thrombotic Syndrome?

The symptoms of PTS can last for months or years. Unfortunately, for some, they can be lifelong. Symptoms may include:

• Leg pain
• Swelling
• Cramping
• Heaviness
• Dry, flaky skin
• Changes in pigmentation on the leg or foot
• Ulcers
• Difficulty standing or extended periods
• Difficulty walking/pain from walking

What Is the Treatment for Post-Thrombotic Syndrome?

Unfortunately, there is no way to safely and effectively replace or repair damaged deep vein valves surgically. There are, however, a variety of treatments available for patients diagnosed with PTS that may help alleviate the symptoms. Dr. Aggarwal has years of experience treating vein disease and will provide you with a comprehensive care plan to help you manage your symptoms. Treatment may include:

• Elevating your legs
• Compression stockings, which will help with pain and swelling and improve circulation
• Medication for pain, if needed
• Exercise, walking when possible. If unable to walk, we will teach other methods of exercise that can be done while sitting or lying down
• Ulcer care, including bandages and/or medication
